Diablo 4's boss ladder rewards planning more than raw damage. You can melt an Initiate boss and still waste the session by opening the wrong Hoard, chasing a poor Unique pool, or spending resources before your build has a clear target. A little extra D4 Gold may help with general gearing, but Greater Lair Keys are earned through a specific loop: standard keys lead to Initiate fights, Initiate Hoards can provide Greater Keys, and Greater bosses focus your loot hunt.

Start With the Hoard, Not the Boss Door

The most commonly missed detail is where the Greater Key actually enters the process. You don't need a Greater Lair Key to begin a Greater-tier fight, and joining another player's run doesn't automatically give you the reward from their Hoard. After defeating an Initiate boss, you need your own eligible key to open your personal reward chest.

Build your supply of standard Lair Keys through War Plans, Helltides, World Bosses, Legion Events, and Tree of Whispers caches. Then pick the Initiate boss your current loadout clears fastest. From what I've seen, total cycle time matters more than the boss with the theoretically nicest loot table: travel, invulnerability phases, deaths, and inventory sorting all count.

A Better Farming Checklist

Before starting a long session, prepare the loop instead of reacting to every drop. The following order keeps your materials and time pointed at the same goal.

Choose War Plan rewards that include keys or useful supporting materials.
Save enough standard keys for several consecutive Initiate runs.
Open every personal Hoard rather than leaving rewards behind.
Keep Stygian Stones available for converting toward a missing Greater key type.
Spend Greater Keys only after checking which boss drops the slot or Unique effect your build needs.

Greater Keys Versus Superior Keys

These resources sit on different rungs, so confusing them can derail a session. Greater Lair Keys are tied to Greater Boss Hoards and targeted Unique farming. Superior Lair Keys belong to the top seasonal boss route, including the Corrupted Reaper's Hoard in Season 14, with Deathtoll Chambers serving as the main source at high Torment.

Returning Uniques Need a Build Plan

Season 15's test content brings back Leoric's Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt's Blouse, Arioc's Needle, Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, and Messerschmidt's Reaver. The last item is planned but wasn't active in the current test build. These are permanent additions in the announced plan, not gear restricted to one seasonal character.

The names are familiar, but the slot and effect decide their value in Diablo 4. Leoric's Crown connects a helm slot to gem planning, while Stone of Jordan must compete with other ring choices. Two-handed weapons such as The Furnace and Arioc's Needle need to justify the loss of offhand flexibility. I could be wrong but, that tension will matter more than nostalgia once players start comparing real DPS, resource comfort, and survivability.

Preserve the Good Drop

The proposed Horadric Cube upgrade gives a strong Unique a longer life: a chosen item can become Mythic quality while keeping its affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking, with a Crafted tag and a one-item equipment limit for this direct method. Since the test version may change, don't spend rare materials around an assumed cost. Do inspect every promising drop first, though. A well-rolled legacy Unique may be worth keeping as a long-term project instead of replacing it the moment a higher item power piece appears.

Spend Keys With a Target

My best advice is simple: record the missing slot before you farm. Greater Keys feel scarce when every boss is treated as a slot machine, but the same keys feel productive when each run answers a build question. Pick the fastest difficulty your character can clear without repeated deaths, track several runs rather than judging one lucky streak, and keep flexible materials for the boss pool that matters most. For players short on general funds, buy Diablo 4 Gold only as part of a wider gearing plan, then let your key route decide where the next serious upgrade comes from.
